February 4th Assignment

The story I read was called "For Mexico's Journalists, story assignments can be a date with death" by Mariano Castillo. It is a story about how the journalism in Mexico is the most dangerous throughout the world. I think that is awful that people will put thier lives on the lines to get a good story. Although it is important to get the facts, if you know that people are going to target you because you are exposing the truth, it is not worth risking your life for it.

Define Broadcast Journalism:
Broadcast Journalism is airing news or current events instantaneously through tv, radio, or internet.

Chapter 3- The News
What is news?
  • News is an account of events that interest and concern the public.

List and describe the six criteria of newsworthiness

SIX CRITERIA FOR NEWSWORTHINESS

1. Unusualness :News that is the different, the unusual, the out-of-the ordinary. Unusual is more often found in bad news. ex. if a plane crashes

2. Significance: Important events that affect many people. ex. taxes, elections, wars, scientific discoveries, the economy

3. Timeliness: People want to hear about the story while it is happening, not when it is old. If it is old news, then it isn't news; its history. ex. people want to hear about the flood that is happening right now.

4. Proximity: People want to know about nearby events. ex. the asbestos problem in the local school, the news tate tax law, the proposed regional highway.

5. Prominence: When well-known people, buildings, or places are involved. ex. if a movie star is arrested

6. Human Interest: stories that have an emotional and person appeal that draws the viewers attention. ex. a minister who runs a drop-in center for troubled teenagers. a veterinarian who specializes in elephants, a sand castle competition.

What is the difference between print journalism and broadcast journalism?

1. Newspapers provide fuller coverage of more stories than the other media, including more human interest and entertainment features.

2. Readers act as thier own editors, picking an dhcoosing what they want to read.

3. News magazines provide in-depth coverage of a number of important stories

4. Radio news reports are very limited, but most timely of all the news media.

5. Television news with the addition of video. provides the most dramatic news coverage.

STORIES FROM CNN

1. Unusualness: The Government has your Baby's DNA by Elizabeth Cohen

2. Significance: Recalls don't scare some loyal Toyota fans by Christina Zdanowicz

3. Timeliness: Blizzard conditions predicted for Washington, Baltimore

4. Proximity: Teen Sues MSU-Mankato over alledged sex assult at football camp by Dan Nienaber

5. Prominence: Brittany Murphy's Death ruled an accident by Alan Duke

6. Human Interest: My Secret Life under "dont ask/don't tell" by Joan E. Darrah

USA Today Review

The article that I read was called, "Taylor Swift takes a step back from the spotlight after the awards." I thought this article was interesting because it talked about how it was benificial for Taylor to not win all the awards and take a sweep at the Grammy's. I completely agree with this becuase I think that Taylor Swift is almost becoming "over-rated" because she is everywhere. I think that she became way too popular, way too fast, and I think she needs a break. Although I am a Taylor Swift fan, its nice to have a break from her winning everything and giving other artists chances to win for thier hard work.

Interview

The person that I interviewed was Taylor Fienhage. She is a sophmore at wanted to take broadcast journalism because she thought it would be fun and likes to work in teams. She also wants to be on the forecast next year so this class was even more important. Taylor has played hockey since she was four and also likes to play lacrosse and other sports in general. She enjoys collecting change and hanging out with her friends. She moved to Minnesota when she was in kindergarten and she really likes Chipotle. However, she hates fish and to this day has never eaten any kind of fish, and never plans to!
